Most of us don't notice it when we're walking on it, but cork flooring has been naturally enriching interiors for over 100 years. Cork bark is typically harvested every nine or ten years. Bottle stopper corks are punched from the best material. The remaining scraps are then ground into small granules, mixed with a binder, molded into large pieces and baked in specialized ovens - making use of every single portion of the cork bark.

As a floor covering, cork is durable, provides acoustical and thermal insulation, cushions the foot, is resistant to moisture damage and decay and is easy to clean. In addition to all of these features cork is harvested from trees in a sustainable manner - making it very worthy of consideration for use in green building.

Corks impact on the environment is extremely low due to the sustainable harvesting practices and basically zero waste from the manufacturing process. Producing nations regulate how frequently cork can be harvested in order to minimize damage to the trees.

A cork oak can live for up to 200 years, over which time its bark can be harvested up to 20 times. Not only is the bark inherently resistant to extreme temperature changes, it is resistant to over 38 species of insects, including termites, and to the development of microbes. Cork is exemplary in green flooring because the forest and surrounding habitat is kept 100% alive and undisturbed.

For many green consumers, marmoleum is their flooring choice because it's made from materials that are natural and renewable. The main ingredient is linseed oil, which gives linoleum its name. Linseed oil comes from flax, an easily cultivated plant also used to make linen. Other ingredients include natural pigments, pine rosin, and wood flour, often made from sustainably harvested pine trees. This mix is heated and run through rollers that press the flooring into a sheet and onto a fabric backing (usually jute), then hung to cure. No toxins are used or produced during the manufacturing, and no off-gassing occurs during use.

Besides using green ingredients, marmoleum is extremely healthy – making it the flooring choice of many hospitals and health care facilities.

Bamboo grows to maturity in just 5-6 years (and can be harvested multiple times), while other typical flooring can take up to 80+ years (and can only be harvested once). Teragren controls their production process from harvest to distribution. The durable, 7-coat factory finish is a water-based and solvent-free. The proprietary manufacturing adhesive emits less formaldehyde than allowed by standards. Select products are also available manufactured with a formaldehyde free adhesive. All of Teragrens Bamboo floors are FloorScore certified, which is one of the world's most stringent indoor air quality standards. Bamboo also absorbs more carbon reducing co2 levels that lead to global warming, and they also release up to 35% more oxygen as well.

When you think of Green Products, you may think of cork, reclaimed wood, Marmoleum, bamboo & recycled glass. You will be pleased to also find that there are many commercial & residential carpets, porcelain tile, underlay & vinyl products that contain recycled content too. Many Green products are LEED certified, and some of our products are recyclable & re-usable. It will give you a great feeling knowing that you're helping the environment using our ever-expanding line of Green Products!
