Getting Ready for Spring – 20 Inexpensive Ways to Refresh Your Home

It has been a long winter all across Canada. If you are like me, I’m just itching to get my hands into my garden. Just the smell of fresh cut grass raises a person spirit. So while we wait for Mother Nature to share with us her very best in the sunshine, and ask Old Man Winter to retreat for (hopefully) 6 months, what can we do to make our indoor space feel more like the outdoors we love? Well if it’s not in the cards to do a full renovation or even a modest one, here are a few inexpensive tricks to bring the outdoors in.

There’s a reason that people swear up and down that they’ll never move again once they’re settled into a new house. Moving into a new home may be exciting — but getting ready to move is a stressful, exhausting process that takes a lot of work.

If you’re planning a move and don’t know where to start, this blog post will walk you through everything you need to know about staging, packing, cleaning, and decorating to make your move just a little bit easier.

Canada Day 150!
WOW—Canada is 150! We hope that everyone enjoys a safe and relaxing long weekend celebrating with friend and family.
For those of us in the building and construction industry, we are used to seeing change every day within our work environment. But have you ever thought about the changes in the housing industry over the time that Canada became a country in 1867?
The change in structure alone is staggering! Types of building materials, insulation, and roofing. Then came heating—and indoor plumbing!! From hand-sawn lumber to huge mills processing the lumber we need. R-values, new and improved windows, high-efficiency furnaces, low VOC paints, and the movement towards LEED and Green Certified products and projects.
It’s an ever-changing industry. It keeps us on our toes. Our Interior Design trends change constantly, and we love to see the new colors and styles of interiors pop up.
Makes you wonder what the next 150 years will bring for our homes and the building industry.
Stay tuned!!

Choosing new flooring or wall tile can be fun and exciting, but for many people it is stressful and overwhelming and most people don’t know where to start or don’t know what they like. One strategy I like to try with many of my clients is to get them to discover what they don’t like. They may not like a tile look, they may not like carpet, greys may not be for them, or they may not like the look of flashy wall tile.  I like to use this strategy in my appointments because it helps them discover that maybe they do know what they like they just didn’t know they did.

So next time you are planning a renovation or remodel find out what you don’t like, and before you know it you will be living in the space of your dreams.

Nautical Inspired Nursery

Posted on June 01, 2017

Just recently I was told I would soon be a gramma, and my mind started racing with design ideas for the “Nursery”.  My daughter came up with ideas and I found products to fit.  A nautical theme was decided on, and I was off and running.  The room already had beautiful hardwood flooring, so we decided on a nice plush and soft area rug.  Wood on walls is a popular decorating trend, so we went with it, picking a distressed laminate for accent walls behind the crib.  Remember, just because it’s called flooring doesn’t mean it has to be installed on the floor.

Cat1 carries lots of different products that can be used for these accent walls, like vinyl plank, laminate, prefab wall panels and As-Is wood planks. It is amazing to see the transformation from a painted wall into a feature wall!!

With Spring finally arriving, our thoughts turn to being outside. It's been a long winter, and now it's time to check around your exterior and give your house some love--just as you would for the interior.

Have you thought about painting your front door? Take a step back...what does your front door and entry say about your house? Welcome-- or help!?!!

It's an easy change--a quick weekend job for any DIY'r.

Maybe you'll want to go for something bold--bright yellow is going to make a statement!  If your style is a little more relaxed, choose a soft grey-green, or one of the many beautiful shades of teal so popular right now. What accent colors do you have inside your home?  Tie those colors into your choice for your fresh new front door.

Don't forget to dress your porch, too. Tidy up those flower beds and pots.

Cushions and seating looking a little ragged? Invest in some new accessories. Mix vintage with new.

Treat your front entry as you would any other room in your house. Then sit back, welcome your friends, and enjoy some sun!

Spring is in the Air!

Posted on April 07, 2017

Yah!  – Spring has finally arrived (although it’s hard to tell sometimes when you look out the window).  I don’t know what it is about the change in the seasons but I always feel restless come spring.  Gotta get moving …liven things up a little.  I’m not alone as 'tis the season for Spring Cleaning.

Time to bring new life into your home…open up those windows and let the fresh air in.    Nothing says spring like fresh new bedding, throw cushions or draperies. A fresh coat of paint always makes me smile.

Go outside (Lord knows we are lacking vitamin D).  Perhaps it’s time that Deck got a new face lift …Tufdek anyone?   How about artificial Turf?  Imagine never mowing again.  You can enjoy the cool glass of lemonade from your newly faced deck while watching your neighbors mow their lawns.   Ahhh …enjoying my happy place J

Pantone Greenery

As we approach spring, I can’t help but reflect on the colour forecast for 2017. This year, Pantone’s colour ‘Greenery’ was chosen for the ‘it’ colour; this means you will see it popping up in home décor, consumer products, and even automobiles. Greenery is a very vibrant, granny smith apple, yellow-based green. A very bold addition to any space, this colour is probably best used in small doses as it is not for the faint of heart.
How can you incorporate this fun springy pop of colour into your space? My first instinct is to tell you to introduce this with accessories and interchangeable items around your home. Since this is a trendy colour, I wouldn’t suggest adding it in permanent installations (for example a bold lime green tile backsplash might not be the best choice because even if you initially love it, you might grow tired of it over time). If you are stumped on how to incorporate this invigorating colour into your home, stop by & see the ladies at Rave Designs- they have a ton of fun accessories in store, and have even more selection available by order. Stop by our showroom and then swing into Rave for some extra inspiration- your custom decor will leave your friends green with envy!

Happy St. Patrick's Day - Think Green!

Posted on March 16, 2017

We already know that St. Patrick's Day is all about green, but do you know what green really means?

The colour green has long been associated with nature and growth. It is a colour of balance, self-reliance, acceptance and caring. According to sensationalcolor.com, looking at the colour green affects our bodies in a positive manner. It causes our muscles to relax, decreases the severity of our allergies, stimulates our pituitary gland, and the more commonly known effect is the calm and stress relieving attributes. Maybe this Spring celebrate St. Patrick's Day by adding some green to your home to enjoy a clean, calming environment all year round!
